Google Capricorn

AI Observation tool aiding teachers in identifying students with learning disabilities

ROLE

Concept Designer

OVERVIEW

40% of people with learning difficulties aren't diagnosed in childhood; 80% of dyslexic pupils leave school without a diagnosis

95% of teachers believe that growing classroom sizes are negatively impacting the ability to provide individual support.

The life expectancy of those with undiagnosed learning disabilities can be 15-25 years shorter than the general population

Capricorn is designed to intervene where the system fails, using intelligent observation to ensure no student is left behind

PROBLEM

Classrooms are becoming more crowded, and teacher workloads are increasing. These conditions can negatively impact the student learning experience, as many schoolchildren are not receiving adequate one-to-one attention. As a result, learning disabilities and academic struggles may go unnoticed, leading to poorer educational and long-term life outcomes.

Solution

Google Capricorn is an AI classroom assistant that observes facial expressions, posture, engagement, and student work in real time to identify students who may need additional support or assessment.

Built on edge computing, all analysis happens locally on the device with no cloud uploads. Capricorn is trained to recognise a broad range of neurodivergent behaviours, preventing difference from being mistaken for defiance. Once a “Portrait of a Learner” is created, all raw video and audio are permanently deleted, leaving only structured insights for professional review.

The Referral Process

The Referral Process

1. General Observation
Using affective computing, Capricorn analyses classroom behaviour through micro-expressions, body language, attention patterns, and environmental triggers such as noise or transitions.

2. Work Analysis
Capricorn reviews written work for cognitive markers including handwriting patterns, spelling habits, and repetitive behaviours that may indicate a need for support.

3. Direct Evaluation
One-to-one assessments in reasoning, problem-solving, and mathematics help distinguish situational behaviour from consistent indicators of neurodivergence, creating a detailed portrait for professional diagnosis.

More on Capricorn

Capricorn is Gemini’s elder brother. Where Gemini dazzles in conversation, Capricorn builds the structure that makes lasting recognition possible. Ruled by Saturn and tied to the 10th house of ambition, legacy, and mastery, Capricorn understands that playfulness is earned through discipline, knowledge, and time.

Google Capricorn follows that philosophy. It does not make pedagogical decisions. Instead, it quietly automates observation, gathering rich behavioural and academic evidence so psychologists can work from a detailed, structured picture of a student’s needs. It bridges the gap between the classroom and formal diagnosis.

Traditional classroom observation is expensive and often unreliable. Students behave differently when watched by unfamiliar adults. Capricorn removes that variable by blending naturally into the classroom environment, designed to resemble the USB cameras and corner modems already present in most schools.

For teachers, Capricorn reduces the burden of producing weeks of observation notes, allowing more time for teaching. For students, especially the many neurodivergent children still overlooked, it helps ensure their needs are recognised early and supported properly.
